OUR TERROIR

Where our Vines
Take Root

Great wine starts in the vineyard. On Hogback Mountain, our estate vines sit on elevated, undulating terrain with constant airflow and exceptionally well-drained soils — all critical advantages in Virginia’s challenging climate.

Our vineyards are rooted in ancient geologies (including Catoctin channery silt loam and the Meyersville–Catoctin complex), rich in weathered greenstone schist. These rocky, low-fertility soils encourage the vines to struggle just enough, producing smaller yields of concentrated, intensely flavored grapes.

Combined with steep slopes and a unique meso-climate, this site allows us to craft wines that are both distinctly Virginian and quietly reminiscent of the great Old World regions that inspire us. With every estate bottling, every detail — from vineyard block to barrel program — is considered with a single purpose in mind: to create the best possible bottle of wine from this place.
