Our Story
How Stone Tower came to be — and what inspires us still.
The Huber Family
Three generations of the Huber family have called Hogback Mountain home, celebrating some of their most cherished memories on this land. With deep roots in the agrarian traditions of Western Loudoun and a true love of sharing a great bottle at a long table, the Hubers dreamed of opening their homeplace so others could celebrate their own big moments here — all while preserving the land’s agricultural beauty for generations to come.
What began as a family farm with extraordinary views has grown into Stone Tower Winery: a working estate winery devoted to classic, world-class wines and warm, genuine hospitality.
Grow what you love
Virginia is the first recorded winegrowing region in what is now the United States, with vines planted as early as the Jamestown settlement in 1607. For more than 400 years, growers here have navigated pests, disease, wars, and Prohibition, yet the drive to make great wine in Virginia has never faded. Today, thoughtful site selection and ever-improving viticulture and winemaking techniques have elevated the state to a new level of quality, drawing comparisons to Napa in the 1970s — a region on the cusp of its next great chapter.
Stone Tower is part of that chapter. Before they ever planted a vine, Mike and Kristi Huber were passionate wine lovers. Wondering if the rolling hills of their family’s property could grow truly great wine, they brought in top consultants to study the terroir. The verdict was clear: with the right care, these soils and slopes could produce wines to stand proudly on the world stage. Guided by the advice to “grow what you love,” the Hubers planted their first vines in 2009, focusing first on Chardonnay — Kristi’s favorite — and gradually expanding into a diversified estate vineyard. Today, Stone Tower spans more than 400 acres on Hogback Mountain, with just over 95 acres under vine, growing the varieties needed to craft our wines in-house. From the beginning, the goal has been simple and ambitious: to handcraft world-class wines from our own estate vines and share them with our community in a warm, welcoming setting.
Since planting our first vines in 2009, we’ve focused on classic French varietals — Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and the red grapes that form our Bordeaux-style blends: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot — while also exploring smaller lots of Viognier, Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Rhône white varieties, and more. Each vintage in Virginia is different, and our traditional, time-tested approach in the cellar is designed to let the fruit, and the year, shine.
